Kayak paddles have a blade at each end. We use Sit-On-Top (SOT) kayaks, which means that you are not enclosed in a cockpit. This is a safe kayak for beginners as you cannot get stuck inside if you capsize – you simply fall off!
We have single SOT kayaks and double SOT kayaks available. But what’s the difference?
Doubles will travel faster (with some teamwork!). We would recommend them for paddlers wishing to try the longer trip from Farndon for the first time. However they are also great for family trips – you can put a child up front and an adult on the back.
You will find in a kayak that you are closer to the water and your paddle will drip on you. This means you will almost certainly get a wet bum, legs and feet! Both SOT types also have some storage room for your dry bag.
Most people find the paddling technique easy to pick up. Kayaks are more manoeuverable than a canadian canoe and can be faster. However, paddling a kayak for a long period of time can be more physically demanding.
Sit on top kayaks can be used on flat water, moving water, or the sea! Now, there’s an idea

Journey length: 12 miles
Journey time: 5 to 6 hours
Experience: Prevous experience of paddling a canadian canoe is required.
Cost: £40 per person
8.30am start at Sandy Lane car park (CH3 5UE)
A good level of fitness is advised for this longer trip, along with previous experience of paddling a Canadian canoe (due to the remoteness of the route) If you haven’t got any experience, you can still book the half day trip, or join one of our full day guided expedition. Bring plenty of food and water.
We try to man the phone as much as possible although in the busy season we often can’t pick up (most of the time we’ll be instructing in the outdoors). Leave us a quick message and we will get back to you as soon as we can, or you can email us. On Hire Days our bankside staff will have the telephone, and will pick up – if they are able to – between helping our clients to get paddling. Please ring this number if you are going to be late for a booking.
